Proton’s dark web detection continuously scans dark web hubs associated with illicit activities, such as hacking forums and markets, searching databases for emails contained in data breaches.
We use our own threat intelligence datasets that are also enriched with data from Constella Intelligence and HIBP. We analyze reports from third parties any time they find leaked information or data stolen in a hack from a third-party online service that’s tied to a Proton Mail email address or a Proton Pass alias. Only authenticated custom email addresses, defined by the user, are shared with 3rd party providers.
This includes proton emails, aliases and custom email addresses. Custom email addresses with third party addresses such as Google, Yahoo etc. must be approved for monitoring and authenticated by the user - each user may monitor up to 10 custom email addresses on Proton Pass. Only aliases created with SimpleLogin and Proton domains are monitored.
Free users of Proton Pass can take advantage of the Inactive 2FA and Password Health features of Pass Monitor.

At Proton, your privacy and security are our priority. We minimize the amount of personal data we have access to wherever possible. This applies to Pass Monitor scans for weak/reused passwords, Proton Mail email addresses, and Hide-my-email aliases. This information is not shared with any third parties. We scan third-party data breach records for email addresses and aliases that use our domains (@protonmail.com, @protonmail.ch, @proton.me, etc.). Pass Monitor also conducts password health checks entirely on your device, and your passwords never leave your device. The only exception is if you use a custom email address or outside email address with Proton Mail. In this case, we must share your custom/outside email with a third party so it knows what to look for. However, we will only share this information or include your custom/outside email in Pass Monitor checks if you have given us permission to do so. You can have Pass Monitor protect up to 10 custom/outside emails.
