How can I store my family photos privately?: To store your photos privately, you can use an end-to-end encrypted cloud storage service like Proton Drive. Using a secure cloud storage provider is more convenient than encrypting your photos yourself and storing them locally on a device or an external hard drive.
Can photos be encrypted?: Photos can be encrypted to protect them from unauthorized access. With Proton Drive, no one can access your photos (not even Proton) except you and the people you share them with. With Proton Drive, all the encryption happens automatically, so you do not need any technological know-how to encrypt your photos.
How can I share my family photos with Proton Drive?: You can securely share your photos in Proton Drive with anyone, even if they don’t use Proton Drive, by generating a secure file sharing link. To create an end-to-end encrypted file sharing link for one of your photos, tap on the thumbnail in the Photos tab of your app, tap the menu button (⋮), and then tap Get link. The app will generate a link that you can share with as many people as you like. Anyone who opens the link will be able to view and download your photo.
For extra security, you can choose to add password protection or an expiry date to your file sharing links.
How do I back up my family photos to Proton Drive?: To back up your photos to Proton Drive, open the Proton Drive app on your device, log in to the app, go to the Photos tab, and turn on backup. In case you have turned off back up, choose Settings → Backup → Photos backup and tap the toggle to turn it back on. Proton Drive will start uploading your photos to your secure cloud storage, but if you have many photos on your device, the initial upload may take some time.
What happens if I run out of storage when I back up my photos?: If you run out of storage, Proton Drive will stop automatically backing up your photos. To resume automatic photo backup, you will need to free up some space in Proton Drive (e.g., by deleting files) or upgrade to a plan with more storage.
Are backups automatic for Android and iOS?: Yes, but you need to turn it on. You can ensure your photos are backed up automatically by Proton Drive for Android and iOS by turning on backup from within the Photo tab.
