Using Proton Drive

The Proton Drive web app allows you to preview some file types without opening them, letting you quickly find the file you’re looking for. To find the file type, look at the end of of the file name; the letters after the period (.) in the file name tell you what type of file it is.  Below we list all the file types you can preview:

Image file types

  • APNG
  • BMP
  • GIF
  • ICO (including image/x-icon and image/vnd.microsoft.icon)
  • JPEG
  • PNG
  • SVG
  • XML
  • WebP (depending on your browser)
  • AVIF (available on all modern browsers)
  • HEIC (available on macOS, iOS, and Safari)
  • JPEGXL (available on macOS, iOS, and Safari)

Video file types

All standard video file types that are supported by your browser(nova finestra) or operating system from mobile apps — such as MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, and WMV. This includes long videos such as full-length movies.

Text file types

  • Most text file types (including TXT, DOCX, and more — but not RTF)
  • All MIME types and applications
  • All JavaScript types and applications
  • All TypeScript types

Other

  • PDF

Previewable files on iOS

In addition to the file types listed above, anyone using the Proton Drive iOS app can also preview file types such as iWork and Microsoft Office documents, Live Photos, etc. 

This is because iOS devices use Apple’s Quick Look framework to allow users to preview and perform basic interactions on certain file types.

At present, these previews are exclusive to the Proton Drive iOS app.
