What’s next for Proton Mail and Proton Calendar

From our initial crowdfunding campaign to the recent launch of our encrypted cloud storage service Proton Drive, Proton has always been supported by the community. Your feedback tells us what new features to develop and which we should improve.

For this reason, we want to provide an update on what’s coming next for Proton Mail and Proton Calendar. As 2022 wraps up and we look into the new year, we want to develop stronger protections against technologies that invade your privacy, improve your reading experience, and make your day more productive through deeper integrations between our products.

New key features to expect on Proton Mail

Schedule send

Schedule send lets you write emails and schedule them to be delivered to your recipient when it’s convenient. This feature allows you to work flexibly and reclaim control of your time.

New tracking protections

We’ll be adding new enhanced protections to block spy trackers in your emails. They’ll prevent senders from knowing when you opened an email and make their tracking data unusable. We’ll also protect you from trackers by default on the Proton Mail app for iPhone/iPad.

Set reminders or snooze emails

If you have an important email to follow up on, you’ll be able to set up a reminder to respond to it. You’ll also be able to snooze emails, which will hide an email and remind you about it later. This lets you deal with your emails when you have time to focus.

Categorized emails

We want your inbox to be effortlessly tidy and organized, so we’re working on the ability to automatically categorize the emails you receive based on the sender category in a fully private way. For example, your social media notifications will be separated from your primary inbox view.

Message content search in our mobile apps

With message content search, finding the email you’re looking for will be easier than ever. All your encrypted emails are downloaded to a local index on your device so you can search securely within it. Thanks to our encryption, Proton can’t read the contents of your emails, so your messages always remain private.

Deeper integration with other Proton services

One of our goals for 2023 is to build stronger cross-product integrations within the Proton ecosystem, and here are a few examples. With SimpleLogin, you can already easily generate email aliases when you sign up for a new online service. We plan to make interacting with these email aliases smoother from within Proton Mail.

If you write an email and attach a file that exceeds Proton Mail’s file size limit, it will be automatically uploaded to Proton Drive and sent as a secure link. Similarly, we’ll make it easier for you to save email attachments you receive in Proton Drive.

We’ll also implement Single Sign-On on mobile so you can access all Proton apps by signing into just one of them.

Improved privacy and ease of use

We believe using your Proton Mail inbox should be an enjoyable experience, which is why we’ll also introduce many improvements in 2023, such as:

  • The message view in your inbox will be streamlined to provide a cleaner email-reading experience. You’ll be able to respond to messages without opening the email composer.
  • We’ll release a completely rewritten Proton Mail Android app that runs faster and adds a conversation view.
  • All official Proton emails will be marked with an authenticity badge, replacing our current starring system.

Like everything we build at Proton, protecting your privacy is always our top priority. These innovations we’re working on will be no exception.

New key features to expect on Proton Calendar

In the next few weeks, we’ll also launch our Proton Calendar for iPhone, allowing you to organize your schedule on the go while keeping it private. Once we cross this major milestone, we plan to work on the following improvements.

Tasks and to-do lists

We’re working on giving you the ability to create to-do lists and turn tasks into reminders.

Better sharing

You’ll be able to share your calendar with other Proton users, letting them view your availability. This decreases the chances of a schedule conflict. You’ll also be able to create events and check your availability directly within your Proton Mail inbox.

Improved convenience

Viewing your calendar in different ways is essential to staying organized, which is why we’ll release a full agenda view that displays your events for the day as an infinite-scrolling chronological list.

On the mobile apps, you’ll be able to switch between many views, including a 3-day or 7-day view, and look at your schedule in landscape mode. We’ll also improve the homescreen widgets on the mobile apps to display agenda and month views.

Last but not least, we’ll work on allowing you to view local holidays, your contacts’ birthdays, and your local weather forecast.

What we’ve released recently

Throughout this year, we’ve also released exciting features. Here are some highlights:

Improved mobile apps

We introduced a complete redesign of our iOS and Android apps, featuring a sharp new look, dark mode, and an easy-to-use interface. We also made the Proton Calendar app available for everyone on Android, allowing you to keep track of your plans and appointments on the go.

Tracking protection

Since the start of this year, Proton Mail automatically blocks all tracking pixels found in newsletters and other promotional emails, preventing senders from spying on your mail. We also hide your IP address from third parties so your location remains private.

2FA security keys for Proton accounts

You can now sign into your Proton Account using a security key, also known as a hardware key or a two-factor authentication (2FA) key. It’s the simplest and most secure way of accessing your account. Instead of needing a device with an authenticator app, you can sign in to your Proton Account on the web using a YubiKey or any security key that adheres to the U2F or FIDO2 standard.

Blocking unwanted senders

Whether it’s a persistent salesperson or annoying spam, you can block senders in your Proton Mail inbox for greater peace of mind. If you block a sender, their emails will be permanently deleted without ever reaching your inbox.

Sender images

You can now view images of popular senders, such as your favorite newsletter subscription or online retail store, in your Proton Mail inbox on the web. By displaying them, you can quickly find the email you need at a glance.

Automate recurring actions

If you’re frequently moving emails between folders or labeling them, you can automate these actions with just a single click. Once activated, your emails will be labeled or moved between folders automatically.

Building an internet that’s private by default

Like all roadmaps, the development of these features will be subject to change as we collect more feedback from the community. Hearing from you is an important part of our planning process and helps us decide what features we should build next. Join the conversation on Twitter(new window), Reddit(new window), and Facebook(new window) and let us know what you think.

Once again, thank you for supporting our mission to build a better internet where privacy is the default.
