Passwords are sensitive information and sharing them isn’t usually Sharing access to online accounts has become a common practice — whether it’s sharing a bank account with a partner, streaming service credentials with family, or login details for business social media accounts. However, with convenience comes the critical need for security. Ensuring that only chosen recipients can access your accounts is essential.

Unfortunately, people often share passwords via unsafe methods, such as Gmail or Whatsapp. Even if you share passwords much more securely with Proton Mail’s encrypted email service(новое окно), it’s inconvenient to have to resend the information if you change the password.

That’s where Proton Pass comes in. Proton Pass is our password and identity manager that lets you safely store login credentials, bank cards, secure notes, and other important data. Using our mobile apps and browser plugins, you can easily access and autofill your information on any device. With its robust and secure sharing features, Proton Pass empowers users to safely share sensitive account information, making your online life easier and more secure.

Using Proton Pass offers different ways of sharing data securely, either at work or at home. You can easily share your passwords, usernames, credit cards, and other data stored in Proton Pass with anyone. Your data stays end-to-end encrypted, and you can revoke access anytime. In this article, we’ll explore two of the key ways you can share your passwords, Identities, vaults, and more.

Sharing single items permanently

If you don’t want to share an entire vault with someone, you can instead share a single item with them. This can be anything in your Proton Pass account: a password, a secure note, or a credit card can be easily and quickly shared on a permanent basis. Items you’ve shared can also be autofilled, increasing the speed and convenience with which you can use Proton Pass.

Instead of creating a Secure Link which grants temporary access, sharing a single item means that your recipient won’t lose access. You can grant write or read-only permissions, and the person you’re sharing with will always be able to access the information from the Shared with me section in their Proton Pass account.

Sharing a single item doesn’t require reorganizing your vaults or granting more access than your recipients needs. It’s the perfect way to share controlled access to a single piece of information. In a business environment, this is essential: the principle of least privilege protects your data and prevents unauthorized access to sensitive information.

For instance, you can ensure that a worker has access to a particular business account without granting them access to all of the accounts in your financial planning vault. This prevents accidental access being granted and simplifies access management, with secure information sharing in just a few clicks across platforms and devices.

Sharing vaults with Password sharing

In Proton Pass, vaults help you organize your passwords. You can create custom vaults for banking, gaming, family accounts, or work logins.

Security is always our top priority, so Password Sharing uses end-to-end encryption at all times to ensure only you and the people you authorize can access shared data. You can learn the technical details of our encryption in the Proton Pass security model.

To share data with someone, choose a vault or create a new one in your Pass account. On any device, tap Share and enter the email address of the person you want to share the vault with. They will receive an invitation to access the items in the vault. You can choose custom levels of access for everyone you invite, including view, edit, or admin. You can also revoke access to your vaults if needed.

Sharing vaults is ideal for family life: create vaults with streaming service logins, online banking, government and school portals, and everything else you need to share access to on a day-to-day basis. Vault sharing is also easily configured for business purposes. With a Proton Pass for Business account, employees can share logins securely with admins enforcing security policies to protect business information.

Share with anyone

Sharing the information you store in your Proton Pass account with family and friends makes everyday life more convenient. When used in your workplace, you can speed up collaboration, control access to sensitive information, and improve productivity.

As we mentioned, sharing in Proton Pass isn’t limited to just passwords. You can also share credit cards, secure notes, and Hide-my-email aliases(новое окно). Sharing is available on all our platforms(новое окно).

You can share with anyone, even if they don’t have a Proton Pass account yet. When they receive the invitation, they will be able to create a new account and access the shared vault with just two clicks.

Password Sharing is available to everyone with a Proton Pass account, including those with Free plans. If you have a Free plan, you’ll be able to share vaults with up to two others, which is more than any other free password manager. Paid subscribers can create up to 20 vaults with up to nine others per vault. You also benefit from the numerous other benefits of Proton Pass Plus, such as unlimited hide-my-email aliases.

Single item sharing is only available with a Proton Pass Plus plan or a Proton Pass Professional plan. If you’re interested in making the most of your Proton Pass account, visit your account to upgrade today.
