If you want to elevate your professional identity, it’s important to learn why and how to create a custom email domain.
Most email addresses use the default domain provided by their email service. For Proton Mail accounts, it’s proton.me. For Gmail, it’s gmail.com. These are usually free and work fine for most people. But if you have a business, club, or brand you want to grow, a custom email address can improve your brand visibility, marketability and organizational control.
This article covers everything you need to know about custom email domains, including how to set one up with Proton Mail, and some benefits of using a custom email domain that you might not have considered.

What is an email domain?
Email addresses have two parts, separated by an @ symbol. The first part is the username. The second part is the email domain (for example, username@emaildomain.com).
The domain helps identify which email provider to route incoming emails to. Because every email address has a domain, it’s often one of the first things someone notices when contacting another person or business. Because of this, it’s also one of the easiest and cheapest ways to market your brand or elevate your professional image.
What is a custom email domain?
A custom email domain is a personalized email domain that you own. A custom email domain is important for brand recognition and creating a professional look for your business, but it can be beneficial for personal use, too.
Some email services let you swap out their generic domain for your own domain. For example, you@yourname.com may point to a Proton Mail server, or even a private email server you own. Emails still know where to find you thanks to a routing system that takes place behind the scenes.
Domain names are a memorable shorthand that help route traffic on the internet. Your email domain is associated with something called an MX record (mail exchanger record), which points to a mail server.
Below we’ll show you how to get a custom domain with email and connect it with MX records for a few popular email providers.
But first, let’s look at some of the benefits of a custom email domain, like increasing your brand identity, or providing more security and organization for your family.
Why use a custom email domain
Custom email domains are most common among businesses, but custom email addresses also offer benefits to individuals, small organizations, and even families. Here are some of the most common reasons to use a custom email domain.
- Look professional — If you’re applying for a job or building a personal brand, a custom email domain is more memorable and professional than the email address you’ve had for decades, or an email with a generic domain name.
- Establish brand visibility — If you have a business, it’s important that your company has its own custom email domain to establish professionalism, and also to create consistency across brand assets that help others recognize your business immediately.
- Freedom to change providers — With a generic email domain like gmail.com, you’re tied to that email service. If you want to switch to a new email provider, you have to get a new email address. Custom email domains allow you to switch to a new provider without giving up your email address.
- More organizational control — If you own a custom email domain, you can choose who uses email addresses associated with that domain. Your employees’ email addresses belong to you, and you can assign or revoke them as needed.
- Better email addresses — Generally speaking, people with generic email domains have already claimed all the best usernames. But if you own a custom email domain, you can create custom email addresses like sales@example.com or firstname@lastname.com.
- Stronger security — You can maintain better cybersecurity if it’s easy to recognize emails coming from inside your organization. For example, if a colleague sends you a link or an invoice you weren’t expecting from a hotmail.com email address, this is an immediate red flag that a hacker may be impersonating someone to hack you or commit fraud.
How to get a custom email domain
There are two main steps to setting up a custom email domain. If you don’t already have your own domain, you’ll need to buy one from a registrar and connect it to an email service provider.
1. Purchase a domain from a registrar
If you already own a custom email domain, you can skip this step and immediately connect it to Proton Mail.
If not, you’ll need to buy a custom email domain. There are many companies, known as registrars, that sell email domains. Cloudflare, Bluehost, Namecheap, and GoDaddy are among the most popular.
The domain registrar will let you look up available domains, pay for them online, and manage them from your account dashboard. Once you’ve set up your custom domain, look for the DNS panel in your account. You’ll need that for the next step.

How to choose a custom domain for your email
If it’s your first time picking a custom email domain, you might not know where to start. Sometimes, the perfect domain is already taken. Here are some ideas to help you pick the right domain for your custom email address:
- Keep it short — When it comes to domains, shorter is almost always better. You want your domain to be memorable, easy to type, and difficult to mess up. Remember, you may need to communicate your email address to someone verbally at some point, so you’ll want to choose something easy to spell out.
- Avoid special characters — Like strange domain extensions, special characters can be an indication of spam or phishing. Try to keep it to letters only.
- Consider your budget — There are still a lot of great domains available, but they’ll cost you. The best domain for you might cost a few thousand dollars. You’ll need to determine whether the return on investment is worth it for the domain you choose.
