How to manage your Proton subscription
You can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel your Proton subscription anytime.
When you downgrade to another paid plan, any unused time is converted into prorated account credits that are applied automatically to future payments.
If you cancel your subscription and switch to a Proton Free plan, one of the following will happen:
- Your subscription ends immediately, and you receive a refund or prorated credits, or
- Your plan remains active until the end of the current billing period and does not renew.
VPN and Pass plans always follow the second option. Plans for other Proton apps may follow either option, depending on when you subscribed. When you cancel a subscription, the downgrade to the free plan happens after the current billing period ends. Switching to a different plan takes effect immediately. We’re working to move all users to this behavior.

What to keep in mind when downgrading or canceling
If your account exceeds the limits of the plan you’re downgraded to, some features may stop working. For example, if you downgraded to the Proton Free plan, and your Mail storage is over the 1 GB limit, you won’t be able to send or receive new emails until you free up space or upgrade again.
