This article was updated on June 17, 2024, to reflect the fact that a limited-time offer discussed in the article has now expired.
This article was updated on June 4, 2024, to reflect further restrictions imposed by Dashlane on its free users and to highlight a new promotion from Proton Pass.
Last year, Dashlane Password Manage announced(nieuw venster) it would impose a 25-password limit on free plans. This essentially made the product useless, as according to Dashlane’s own research(nieuw venster), the average American has about 300 online accounts. Dashlane is now restricting its free plan even further.
From June 6, 2024, if you’re a Free Dashlane plan member with more than 25 saved passwords, your account will be read-only. This means:
- No autofill for your logins, emails, payment details, or ID cards
- You can’t copy and paste your Dashlane items
- You can’t add new items or update existing items
- You can’t see your Password Health score
However, with Proton Pass, you can keep all your passwords and continue adding unlimited new logins. You can export your Dashlane logins and import them to Proton(nieuw venster) with one click. It’s totally free and always will be.
Switch to a free, unlimited Dashlane alternative
Proton Pass is a free alternative to Dashlane that lets you store unlimited passwords, use unlimited devices, store end-to-end encrypted data, autofill items, and create up to 10 hide-my-email aliases(nieuw venster). Pass also offers password sharing with multiple people and multiple vaults on the free plan. These features make the Proton Pass Free plan the most generous free plan of any password manager.
If you’re switching from Dashlane or another password manager, you can import your logins to Proton Pass with one click(nieuw venster).
Proton Pass stores your passwords and other items with end-to-end encryption as part of Proton’s open-source, secure ecosystem, trusted by over 100 million people around the world.
We believe privacy is a fundamental human right, so we don’t place arbitrary limits on our privacy tools. Online privacy and security should be accessible to all, not just those who can pay.
Special offer on Proton Pass Plus plans
To get extra features and support our social mission, consider purchasing our Proton Pass Plus plan. This offers additional benefits, such as:
- Unlimited hide-my-email aliases(nieuw venster)
- Integrated two-factor authentication(nieuw venster)
- Multiple vaults
- Passkey support(nieuw venster)
- Pass Monitor(nieuw venster) — provides proactive alerts for credentials exposed on the dark web. (It also identifies weak and reused passwords and checks for inactive two-factor authentication, although we also offer this level of protection on our Free plan.)
- Proton Sentinel(nieuw venster) — an AI-driven high-security program
If you decide you don’t like it, you can switch back to our Proton Pass Free plan without losing any of your passwords or logins.
We understand most people have more than 25 accounts and need to create and store secure passwords for all of them, so our Free plan will always allow unlimited passwords.
Proton Pass is part of a secure ecosystem
Unlike other password managers, Proton Pass is part of a growing suite of privacy tools that help you take back control of your personal data.
Founded in 2014 by scientists who met at CERN, we built Proton Mail as the first step in our mission to protect your online identity(nieuw venster) and your emails. Today, Proton Mail, Proton Calendar, Proton Drive, Proton VPN, and Proton Pass protect the data of over 100 million people around the world, including activists and journalists who depend on Proton to resist the pressure of state surveillance.
Proton Pass is the next evolution of our journey — not just a password manager but an identity manager that helps you defend your digital ID against threats to your privacy from hackers, governments, and Big Tech.
Our mission is to make the internet a better place where privacy and freedom are the default. You can join us and take the first step by switching to Proton Pass today.
