From now until September 30, Proton is offering Swiss businesses impacted by the hammer of US tariffs a 100% discount on Proton services. For everyone else in Switzerland — individuals and organizations who want to stop sending Swiss money to US tech giants — we’re offering 39% off Proton services.

On August 7, the president of the United States placed an astronomical 39% tariff on all Swiss goods entering the US, nearly three times the rate companies in the European Union are being charged. The result is a financial crisis for many of Switzerland’s smaller exporters, which depend on exports to the United States.

We believe that it’s necessary to show solidarity in times of crisis. Therefore, Proton is offering up to a year of our services for free to all impacted businesses with fewer than 100 employees, with the possibility of renewal if the high tariffs are still in force. The total amount of free services offered will be up to 20 million Swiss francs, with Proton AG and the nonprofit Proton Foundation directly subsidizing the cost.

It’s time to reconsider our dependence on US tech

The Swiss economy is extraordinarily dependent on US tech. In 2023, Switzerland imported $50 billion in services from the US, predominantly Swiss businesses paying for US tech services. Today, two out of three (68%) publicly listed Swiss businesses rely on US email services, and several sensitive sectors are even more dependent, such as utilities (80%), health care (77%), pharmaceutical & biotechnology (77%), and software and IT services (75%).

This dependence leads to Swiss wealth flowing overseas to the country attacking our economy, undermining our national sovereignty and independence. In the upcoming trade negotiations, our total dependence on American tech leaves Switzerland susceptible to blackmail and unable to robustly defend our national interests.

In the 21st century, there is no sovereignty without technological sovereignty. Swiss money is better spent developing our own technology and services industry than supporting the economy of unreliable trading partners.

Supporting Swiss and European alternatives helps develop our continent’s innovation and digital economy, providing us with new growth industries of the future that are immune to tariffs (unlike goods, tech services exported from Switzerland are not taxed).

In this crucial period, it’s also important to avoid regulations that would undermine individual privacy and force tech companies to potentially leave Switzerland, such as the harshly criticized OSCPT revision.
