How to password-protect your shared files in Proton Drive

Using Proton Drive

You can share files and folders from Proton Drive with anyone using secure shareable links. These links are generated locally in your browser, so Proton never has access to your files or folders.

You can also protect the link with a password and set an expiration date after which the link will no longer work.

If you’ve already created a shareable link and want to add a password to protect it:

1. Log in to Proton Drive(new window) or choose Proton Drive from the app switcher in Proton Mail.

2. Go to My files, select the file or folder you want to add a password to, and click Manage link.

Or select the Manage link option from the vertical three-dot menu on the right.

3. Select Privacy settings, turn on the Protect with password switch, and add a strong password.

If you want to set an expiration date after which the link will no longer work, turn on the Set expiration date switch and choose a date.

Click Save when you’re done.

4. Close the Share via link window and paste the link into an email or messaging app to send it.

Anyone who receives the link can click on it to access the shared files by entering the password. Make sure you send the password to the person you’re sharing the files with using a secure communication channel or just tell them in person.

If you’ve already created a shareable link and want to add a password to protect it:

1. Tap the horizontal three dots next to the file or folder, and select Sharing options.

2. Tap inside the Password protection field and enter a password.

3. If you want to set an expiration date after which the link will no longer work, turn on the Expiration date switch and choose a date.

4. Tap Save at the top right to set the password and expiration date (if you’ve chosen one).

Now anyone who wants to access your file or folder will need both the link and the password.
