Push notifications for iOS and Android are sent each time you receive a new email to your inbox. There are no notifications for emails marked as spam. You will receive a push notification even if you open the message from another device.

There are multiple reasons you may not be receiving push notifications on your mobile device for incoming emails. In this article, we discuss some of the most common problems and their solutions.

Android

Check that Push Notifications are enabled from the Proton Mail app settings. To do this, go to SettingsApp SettingsPush NotificationsNotification Settings and ensure that Show notifications is toggled on.

Ensure Google Play Services(new window) are enabled. We currently use Google Play Services to implement push notifications, although we will try to find other ways to support push notifications in the future.

  • Check if the snooze option is enabled in the Proton Mail app settings (Settings → account name → SnoozeNotifications Snooze). You will not receive any notifications when the snooze option is active.
  • Close and restart the Android app.
  • Log out of your account in the app and then log in again
  • Exclude the Proton Mail app from your device’s battery optimization or power-saving features. It is increasingly common for Android device manufacturers to improve battery life by aggressively closing apps. If Proton Mail is put to sleep in this way, you may not receive push notifications from the app.

Details for exempting Proton Mail from battery optimization or power saving vary by device. On Samsung phones running One UI, for example, open the Settings app, go to Apps and tap the three-dot vertical ellipse icon at the top right of the screen.

Go to Special accessOptimize battery usage. Select All from the dropdown menu and scroll down or use the search function to find Proton Mail. Toggle the switch off to prevent your device from optimizing the Proton Mail app.

On Huawei devices, open the device’s Settings and go to Advanced settingsBattery managerProtected apps. Find Proton Mail and protect it. In this way, you can “whitelist” the app, preventing Huawei’s software from shutting it down for no reason.

  • If none of the above works, please reinstall the Proton Mail app.

iOS

  • Check that push notifications are allowed for Proton Mail. Open iOS Settings → locate the Proton Mail app → Notifications and ensure that Allow Notifications is toggled on.
  • Close and restart the app.
  • Log out of the app and log in again.

If none of the above works, please reinstall the Proton Mail app.

Note: To receive push notifications for custom folders in iOS and iPadOS you must enable them for each folder. Go to Settings → account name → Folders and select a folder.

Toggle the Notifications swtch to on and tap Save.
