Meta has started testing a new subscription plan on Instagram called Instagram Plus, and one feature stands out above the rest: subscribers can view Stories anonymously. This changes a long-standing social contract on Instagram: If you watch someone’s Story, they can see that you watched it.

For stalkers(nouvelle fenêtre), disgruntled exes, harassers, or obsessive viewers who might otherwise be deterred by the fact that their identity is visible, this feature removes that friction. Anyone willing to pay for Instagram Plus can watch Stories surreptitiously, which could increase the risk of harm(nouvelle fenêtre) for posters. Meta seems willing to make posters’ loss of privacy a paid feature for viewers.

Instagram without a Plus plan makes posters more exposed

As reported by TechCrunch(nouvelle fenêtre), Instagram Plus introduces the ability to watch Stories without being seen. It also adds other premium features like searching through viewer lists and creating more granular audience groups beyond the standard “Close Friends” feature, letting users divide followers into smaller, more controlled groups.

Users can also extend Stories beyond the usual 24 hours and boost visibility with a weekly spotlight. There are also new interaction mechanics, like animated “Superlikes” designed to increase engagement signals.

Additional reporting from Engadget(nouvelle fenêtre) confirms similar features, including the ability to preview Stories without appearing in the viewer list and access detailed engagement data like rewatch counts. Early tests are carried out in Mexico, Japan, and the Philippines for $1 to $2 a month.

The Instagram Plus plan is separate from Meta’s offerings of Meta Verified for creators (from $14.99 to $499.99 per month per profile) and the ad-free Instagram in the EU and in the UK (from €5.99 to €7.99 per month for one account).

Meta keeps finding new ways to compromise your privacy

Instagram Plus seems to be just one part of Meta’s new ambitions. As reported by TechCrunch(nouvelle fenêtre) a few months earlier, Meta is planning similar subscription models across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, with a focus on “more control” and expanded AI capabilities. That includes experiments with AI tools and content generation features as part of paid tiers.

After Meta’s move to use all interactions with Meta AI for targeted ads and AI training, it looks like Meta is building a model where users have to pay for more control inside products that are becoming more data-driven, more optimized for advertising, and more useful as fuel for AI training.

What does this mean for Instagram’s future?

A wider rollout of Instagram Plus has not been confirmed, but the direction is clear. Control over how you’re seen, who sees you, and what you can do inside the platform is being unbundled and sold back to users in pieces.

One of the clearest examples for Meta is private messaging, as end-to-end encrypted chats on Instagram will no longer be supported. Adding Instagram Plus makes the road ahead clearer: Instagram is heading toward a platform where social boundaries are monetized.

If that future doesn’t sit right with you, consider looking into European alternatives.
