Charts help turn your raw data into something easier to understand and present, such as highlighting trends or tracking performance. This guide shows you how to insert, edit, and download charts in Proton Sheets.

Insert a chart

To add a chart, choose the data range you want to visualize (e.g., A1:B10) and select Insert → 📊 Chart.

If you’ve selected multiple columns, Proton Sheets automatically creates a chart with one data series per column — so you’ll immediately see how each group (like Team A, B, and C) performs.

To customize your chart, click the menu in its corner and select Edit chart.

Chart types

Each chart type helps you visualize data in a different way. Here’s what they’re best suited for:

  • Clustered Column shows bars side by side for each category — for comparing values across teams, products, or time (e.g., sales by region).
  • Stacked Column stacks bars to show totals and parts — for showing breakdowns (e.g., hours worked per phase per team).
  • Line connects points to show trends over time — for tracking changes (e.g., monthly revenue).
  • Stacked Line is like a line chart, but shows how multiple values add up — for cumulative data (e.g., signups by source).
  • Smooth Line is like a line chart, but with curved lines for a cleaner look.
  • 2D Pie divides a circle into slices to show proportions — for showing parts of a whole (e.g., % of tasks by status).
  • Doughnut is like a pie chart, but with a hole in the middle — for clean labeling.
  • Treemap uses nested rectangles to compare category sizes — for visualizing things like revenue by product line.
  • Sunburst is a circular chart that shows data in layers — for multi-level breakdowns (e.g., department → team → project).

Data series

Data series determine what values appear in your chart. When you select multiple numeric columns before inserting a chart, Proton Sheets automatically adds each column as a separate series (for example, one per team or product).

If you want to fine-tune your chart — for instance, to compare only certain columns or include data from non-adjacent ranges — you can manually add or remove series.

Here’s how you add or remove a series:

  1. Click the menu in the chart’s corner and select Edit chart.
  2. Under Legend entries (series), click Add series or select a series to remove.
  3. Choose a data range you want to include or exclude.
  4. Click Save when you’re done.

For example, you can remove Team B Sales if you only want to compare Team A and Team C. Or you can combine Monthly sales and Customer signups to see how performance metrics move together.

Download a chart

To save a chart to your device, click the menu in its corner and select Download chartPNG Image (.png). We only support PNG right now.
