Using folders in Proton Pass

You can create folders and subfolders within your Proton Pass vaults to organize and structure your items. Up to 100 folders can be created per vault.
Which Proton Pass plans include folders?
Folders are supported on Proton Pass Version 1.42.0 and above.
They’re available on Pass Plus, Pass Family, Lifetime, Proton Unlimited, Duo, and Visionary, as well as business plans, including Pass Professional, VPN + Pass Professional, and Workspace.
Folders aren’t available for Proton Free or Pass Essentials. However, if a paying subscriber shares a vault containing folders with Proton Free or Pass Essentials users, those users can still select, create, and move items within those folders.
Create a folder
- Hover over a vault and select the Create folder icon. You can also go to Settings ⋮ → Create folder.
2. Set a folder name and select Create.
3. The folder will appear nested under the vault it was created in.
To create a subfolder, follow the same process as above by selecting the Create folder icon on an existing folder.
Add and remove items
On web and desktop, you can drag and drop items from a vault into a folder.
On Android and iOS, select the item you want to move into a folder, go to Settings ⋮ → Move to and select the folder.
On all platforms, you can also save a new item to a folder when you create it. When you’re creating an item, select the location dropdown and choose the folder you want to save it to.
Rename or delete a folder
Choose the vault you want to rename or delete, open Settings ⋮ and select Rename or Delete.
Search a folder
Searching in a vault also searches all its folders and subfolders. To find items in a specific folder, search the vault that contains it.
Folder permissions
At this time, it’s not possible to share folders individually, but this is planned. Currently, folders inherit the sharing permissions of the vault they were created in. Editors, managers, and owners can create, rename, and delete folders, while viewers can only view them.
Frequently asked questions
What happens to my folders if I downgrade to Proton Pass Free or Pass Essentials?
You’ll still be able to access your existing folders and everything in them, but you won’t be able to create new folders or add items to existing ones.
Can I keep my folder structure when importing from another password manager?
Not yet. You can import your items, but your folder structure won’t be preserved. We plan to support folder imports in the future
Can I export my folders?
Yes. Folders are included in JSON and PGP exports, but not in CSV.
