Reserve your child’s username in Proton Mail
You can reserve a Proton email address for your child to secure a safe, private email address in their name.
This feature is designed for parents, legal guardians, or family members who want to:
- Secure a private email address in their child’s name early
- Prevent someone else from claiming the address
- Prepare for future needs such as school, communication, or online services
- Introduce email to their child when they are ready
What does reserving an email address mean?
Reserving a Proton email address means that you can choose and secure an available Proton username for your child, even if they are not yet ready to use email.
We’ll hold the address for up to 15 years. The account is inactive by default and cannot send or receive emails.
Unlike standard email accounts, a reserved address bypasses inactive account deletion policies, ensuring that your child’s email address stays protected until they are ready to activate it. This can be done using an activation code.
How does email reservation work?
- Go to account.proton.me/born-private.
- Choose your child’s email address. You can enter a desired Proton username and select a domain: @proton.me or @protonmail.com.
- Enter your own email address. We’ll use it to send you a voucher, which contains the activation code needed to activate your child’s email later.
- Make a donation starting at $1. This helps prevent abuse or fraud. All donations support the Proton Foundation’s mission of protecting digital rights and advancing internet freedom.
- Check your email. Once the reservation is complete, your child’s email address is securely reserved and you will receive a secure voucher containing the activation code.
- Activate when your child is ready. At any time within 15 years, you can activate the reserved email address using the activation code.
What happens if you lose your voucher?
If you lose your voucher, you can request a new copy. Here’s how:
- Go to proton.me/activate.
- Enter the parent email address used during reservation and the child’s reserved email address.
- Complete the verification steps.
A copy of the voucher will be sent to your email address.
