Does Proton Drive require recipients to have an account to download files?: If you share a file using a public link, anyone with that link can download it — no Proton account needed. For extra privacy and control, you can instead send an email invite, which requires recipients to use a Proton account before accessing the file. Either way, you can set viewer permissions to let people see or download your files, or editor permissions to allow them to upload, change, or organize content in the shared folder.
Can I use Proton Drive for quick one-off sends or is it mainly for storage?: You can send files quickly to anyone using share links — just like WeTransfer — but with the added benefit of end-to-end encryption so only your intended recipients can access them. Share links can be password-protected, set to expire automatically, or revoked anytime. If you want to keep your files longer, you can use Proton Drive as secure cloud storage for ongoing access and collaboration.
Can I make my shared files expire automatically?: You can set an expiration date for any shared link. After that date, the link stops working, so your files can’t be accessed beyond the time you choose. If you change your mind before the expiry, you can disable the link instantly. Even if you later re-enable sharing, Proton Drive generates a brand-new link, so anyone with the old one will no longer have access unless you send them the new link.
