Using Proton Drive

Proton Drive lets you preview certain file types — no need to open them first. This makes it easier to quickly find or download the file you’re looking for.

To identify a file type, check the file name. The file extension — the letters after the period (e.g., .pdf, .jpg) — indicates the file type.

In the web app

Here are the types of images, videos, text, and other files you can preview using the Proton Drive web app(neues Fenster):

Image file types

  • APNG
  • BMP
  • GIF
  • ICO (including image/x-icon and image/vnd.microsoft.icon)
  • JPEG
  • PNG
  • SVG
  • XML
  • WebP (depending on your browser)
  • AVIF (available on all modern browsers)
  • HEIC (available on macOS, iOS, and some browsers — such as Safari and OperaGX)
  • JPEGXL (available on macOS, iOS, and Safari)

Video file types

All standard video file types that are supported by your browser(neues Fenster) or operating system from mobile apps — such as MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, and WMV. This includes long videos such as full-length movies.

Text file types

  • Most text file types (including TXT and DOCX — but not RTF)
  • All MIME types and applications
  • All JavaScript types and applications
  • All TypeScript types

Other file types

In the iOS app

In addition to the file types supported in the web app, the Proton Drive iOS app(neues Fenster) allows you to preview more file formats, including iWork documents, Microsoft Office files, and Live Photos.

This expanded support is made possible by Apple’s Quick Look framework(neues Fenster), which enables previews and basic interactions for various file types on iOS devices.

In the Android app

File previews on the Proton Drive Android app(neues Fenster) are powered by the mobile operating system itself, so support may vary slightly depending on your device, Android version, and system codecs available.

For more details, see the official Android documentation(neues Fenster) on supported formats.
