Using Proton services without a Proton Mail address
You can create a Proton Account using an email address from other providers like Gmail, iCloud, Outlook, and Yahoo. This will give you access to Proton Drive, Docs, Sheets, VPN(ventana nueva), Pass, Authenticator, Lumo(ventana nueva), and Wallet.
To unlock Proton Mail and Proton Calendar (and the full benefits of our encrypted privacy suite), you can add a Proton Mail address to your account at any time.
How to create a Proton Account using your own email address
- Go to https://account.proton.me/start.
- Click use your current email.

If you don’t see this option, double check that you’re on account.proton.me/start and not https://account.proton.me/mail/signup
- Enter your email address and create a password (try using our password generator to generate a strong password). This password is just for your Proton Account.
- Click Create free account now now.

- We’ll send a verification code to your email address. Check your inbox (don’t forget to check your spam folder), then enter your verification code. Click Verify to continue.

- You’ll be prompted to download an Account Recovery Kit. It’s important that you download the document and store it somewhere safe. Due to our zero-access, end-to-end encryption, Proton cannot recover your account if you forget your password.
- Set your display name and click Continue.
- Click Create account.
All done. You can use your new Proton Account to access Drive, Docs, Sheets, VPN(ventana nueva), Pass, Authenticator, Lumo(ventana nueva), and Wallet.
How to add a Proton Mail address to your account
While you can use most of our services without a Proton Mail address, you will need one to access:
- Proton Mail (end-to-end encrypted email)
- Proton Calendar (private scheduling)
You can add a Proton Mail address to your account at any time:
- Go to https://account.proton.me/switch and sign in.
- Select Proton Mail or Proton Calendar.
- Create your new Proton Mail address. You can use the suggested address, or make your own.
- Click Continue to complete the setup.
All done. You can now start using Proton Mail and Proton Calendar.
This doesn’t remove your non-Proton email address from your account. You can use either address to sign in, and you won’t need to update your password.
Make privacy your default
If you decide to use Proton as your main email provider, you can set up automatic email forwarding from your external email address to your new Proton address.
And if you’re currently using Gmail, you can even send and manage Gmail messages directly from your Proton Mail inbox.
