Who owns Proton Mail

Proton Mail is a service provided by Proton AG, an employee-owned company based in Switzerland. Proton was founded in 2014 by a team of scientists who met at CERN(new window) (the European Center for Nuclear Research). Proton’s global headquarters is in Geneva, Switzerland, and our primary datacenter is located in Zurich, Switzerland.

Proton employees hold the vast majority of shares in the company. The remaining shares are held by the Fondation Genevoise pour l’Innovation Technologique (FONGIT)(new window), a non-profit foundation established for the public good, with a small amount held by Proton users. Proton benefits from support from Innosuisse (the Swiss Federal Innovation Agency) and the European Commission, but neither organization holds any shares nor exercises any control.
