EQUIPCO: Powering environmental monitoring across the U.S. with Proton Mail

At a glance

Company Profile: EQUIPCO

Industry: Environmental Monitoring | Scientific Equipment | Engineering Services

Company size: 10–50 employees | Serving public and private sector clients

Problem: After facing outages and blacklisted IPs, EQUIPCO needed a secure, reliable, and lightweight email solution to protect sensitive project data and ensure deliverability.

Achievement: EQUIPCO now relies on Proton Mail as its primary email provider, ensuring secure, reliable communication across all offices and projects.

Why Proton Mail was the right fit:

  • Eliminates issues caused by blacklisted IPs and shared servers

  • Lightweight, fast interface compatible with thin-client infrastructure

  • Reliable and secure communication for high-value, time-sensitive projects

  • Keeps sensitive project data secure from phishing and unauthorized access

They’re the mechanics in the garage — mostly out of sight, but essential.

For over 30 years, EQUIPCO has rented, sold, and serviced scientific instruments that help environmental consultants and government agencies monitor air, water, and soil. With offices in California, Washington, and Arizona, the company quietly supports projects across the U.S.

“Missing an email could mean missing a whole project,” says Jason Miller, an electronics engineer who’s been with EQUIPCO for over two decades.

After years of unreliable email providers, EQUIPCO turned to Proton Mail for stability, security, and speed.

Reducing disruption

Miller says EQUIPCO went through six or seven providers over the years. Each transition meant migrating records and reintegrating systems — a major hurdle for a company that maintains inbox archives going back a decade.

“I liked that you were a company that primarily does email and tries to do a good job at email — and not also selling domain names and things like that.”

Fixing deliverability

Shared servers with blacklisted IPs created serious email issues. With high-value projects on the line, those disruptions weren’t acceptable.

“Sometimes our stuff is so low volume and high dollar, and all of a sudden we can't email anybody because we're on a shared server and everything is being bounced back because somebody else did something,” Miller said.

“That was probably another big reason I chose Proton — I knew that wouldn't be as much of a problem.”

Built for their systems

EQUIPCO runs on lean, purpose-built infrastructure — including thin clients, lightweight computers that depend on a central server for processing and storage. This setup is efficient, but not compatible with bloated, all-in-one office suites.

“Office 365 is just a no-go in our environment. They're very bloated. They want to do too much,” Miller said.

Proton Mail’s clean interface is better suited. “When your employees are on low-power thin clients, other webmail clients operate too slowly to be useful and try to integrate too many other products,” he said.

Protect your business with Proton Mail

With Proton Mail, your organization’s communications are secured with the same battle-tested end-to-end encryption trusted by millions for over a decade.

Discreet, secure, and reliable

Security is critical for EQUIPCO’s work with state agencies and private contractors. The company often handles sensitive specs and trade secrets.

“We’ve had specific phishing campaigns geared at our industry this year,” Miller said. “A malicious actor getting access to one of our employees’ email accounts could do massive amounts of damage before we even noticed.”

The right fit

“We’re the mechanics in the garage,” Miller said. “It fits into the environment we’ve spent years building. That’s what we needed.”
