With Proton Calendar, you can subscribe to someone else’s calendar and view their events, even if they don’t use Proton.

To subscribe to a calendar, get a sharing link from the calendar owner and add it to your Proton Calendar web app. Once subscribed, you can also view events in our mobile and desktop apps.

Subscribed calendars count towards the total number of calendars available in your plan.

Get a calendar URL

First, ask the calendar owner to share an iCal (.ics) link for their calendar. They might need to make their calendar public (publish) before they can create a link.

The calendar owner might be able to set different viewing permission levels, like showing you when they’re busy but hiding event details. If they change your permission level, they’ll need to share a new link with you.

Sign in to calendar.proton.me(nové okno) and open your account settings (Settings ⚙️ → All settings).
Select Calendars from the sidebar. Go to Other calendars and click Add calendar from URL.
Paste the link under Calendar URL, then click Add calendar.

It might take a few minutes for all events to sync. Once synced, your subscribed calendar will appear under Other calendars. It will count in the total number of calendars available in your plan.

You can also quickly subscribe to a calendar from the Proton Calendar home page. Just Click the + button next to My Calendars, then select Add calendar from URL from the dropdown menu.

Subscribed calendars are view-only

This means you can’t:

Edit or delete events
Set them as your default calendar
Share or export them
Import events to them

To change a calendar’s name or description:

Sign in to calendar.proton.me(nové okno) and open your account settings (Settings ⚙️ → All settings).
Select Calendars from the sidebar and go to Other calendars. Find the calendar you want to edit and click Open settings (⚙️).

Unsubscribe from a calendar

Sign in to calendar.proton.me(nové okno) and open your account settings (Settings ⚙️ → All settings).
Select Calendars from the sidebar and go to Other calendars. Find the calendar you want to edit and click Open settings (⚙️).
Scroll to Remove calendar and click Unsubscribe.

This will remove the calendar along with all its events.

Troubleshooting

Calendars from third parties sync every 8-16 hours, depending on the provider.

If it’s been longer than 16 hours and your events haven’t updated, check your subscribed calendars (Settings ⚙️ → All settings → Calendars → Other calendars).

If you see a not synced warning next to a calendar, hover over it for more information.

You’ll see one of the following messages:

More than 12 hours passed since the last update

We haven’t been able to update the calendar in the last 12 hours. Syncing can take up to 16 hours, so please wait a while before getting in touch.

Unsupported calendar format

The calendar can’t be synced because it uses a different format from the iCalendar(nové okno) standard that we follow. Check that your link is correct.

Calendar link is not accessible

The calendar doesn’t allow external subscribers.

Calendar link is temporarily inaccessible

The calendar owner link may have deleted or edited the link.

Calendar is too big

The calendar file is too large to be imported.

Google Calendar

You can reduce a calendar’s size by only syncing events after a specified date and time. To do this, edit the calendar link by adding the following to the end of the URL:

?start-min=YYYY-MM-DDT00:00:00Z

For example:

https://example.com/calendar123456?start-min=2022-01-01T00:00:00Z

In the above example, all events before January 1, 2022 won’t be synced to Proton Calendar, making the file smaller.

Other calendars

At the moment, there’s no clear workaround for other calendar providers.

But if the calendar platform allows it, you could try generating a shareable link starting at a later date.
