How to manage file version history
Proton Drive allows you to restore older versions of your files. This article explains how to manage your version history.
How do I save a previous version of a file?
If you upload a file with the same name and file extension as a previous file, you will see the prompt below:
If you choose Replace existing file, your current file will be saved as an older version, and the new file will become the current version.
How do I access the version history for my files?
To access the version history of your files, simply right-click on the specific file. The following menu will show up:
Click on See version history to access the version history for your file.
How do I restore an older version of my file?
When you select See version history, you can view previous versions of the file, including when they were saved and who saved them.
Note: You can only change the duration for which previous versions are saved if you have a paid account.
Click on the three vertical dots to see the menu for each file version.
Click on Restore version to make that file the current version
In addition to restoring a previous version, you can also download a specific version or see additional file details.
How can I change my version history settings?
If you subscribe to the Proton Free plan, Proton Drive will save up to 10 versions of each file for up to seven days.
You’ll have more flexibility if you have one of the following paid plans:
- Proton Drive Plus
- Proton Unlimited
- Proton Family
- Proton Visionary (legacy plan)
- Proton for Business
A subscription to any of these plans lets you save up to 200 versions of each file for up to 10 years. You can also customize the duration your files are saved for by doing the following:
- Log in to Proton Drive in a web browser at https://drive.proton.me
- Click on Settings → All settings
- This will take you to the main settings dashboard — click Version history in the Proton Drive section
- You can now select how long you want version history to save older versions of your files
