Projects in Lumo are dedicated spaces where you can store all the information (chats, files, instructions) needed for a specific task. This ensures that Lumo always has all the guidance it needs to assist you better, while saving you from having to re-type the same instructions across sessions.

Projects are end-to-end encrypted and synced across your devices, keeping your data organized and fully private.

Free users can have one Project at a time. Lumo Plus or Lumo Professional users can have unlimited Projects. You must be logged in to your Proton Account to use Projects.

How Project Knowledge shows in Lumo

Whenever new assets are added to the linked Proton Drive folder, Lumo will automatically refer to them when working on the current Project.

Up to 200 files can be added to a Project. You can also add Proton Drive files to chats outside of Projects.

How to manually upload files to a Project

You can also upload files directly from your device to a Project without linking a Drive folder.

  1. Open your Project.
  2. Click Upload from the computer under Project knowledge. Alternatively, click + in the chat dialog and select Upload from device.

How Lumo processes linked and uploaded files

Whether you link Proton Drive files or upload them manually, Lumo uses smart retrieval to find the most relevant information without slowing down the chat.

Lumo only adds files that are relevant to your question. This helps it use the right context while keeping responses fast and accurate.

The smart retrieval flow

  1. Sync: Lumo indexes the files it can access from your linked folders or manual uploads.
  2. Retrieve: When you send a message, Lumo searches the index for the most relevant content. It usually selects fewer than 5 files.
  3. Ground: Only the matching files are added to the request sent to the model.
  4. Respond: The model answers using that targeted context.

Large documents

Lumo is designed to handle very large files efficiently. It splits long documents into smaller chunks, so even a 4,000-page document can be indexed. When you ask a question, only the relevant parts are retrieved and used. You do not need to split large files manually.

Forcing a specific file with @mentions

To make sure a specific file is included, mention it directly in your prompt. Type @ followed by the file name, for example: @budget_report.pdf.

How to use file mentions in Lumo Projects

Lumo will prioritize that file and include it alongside any other relevant files. This is useful when you already know which document contains the answer.

Examples

Broad question

  • You ask: “Summarize the project status.”
  • What happens: Lumo scans the index for files tagged with “status,” “summary,” or recent dates. It might retrieve the latest weekly report and the main project charter, ignoring older drafts or unrelated meeting notes.

Specific question

  • You asks: “What was the Q3 marketing budget in the spreadsheet?”
  • What happens: Lumo searches specifically for the files containing “Q3” and “budget” keywords, retrieves that single file, and passes it to the model for inference.

Large document query

  • You ask: “Find the clause about termination in the 4000-page contract.”
  • What happens: Even though the document is huge, Lumo only retrieves the specific chunks containing “termination” and “clause.” It does not load the entire 4000 pages into the context window, ensuring a fast and precise answer.

File mention

  • You ask: “@meeting_notes.txt, what did we decide about the timeline?”
  • What happens: Lumo forces the inclusion of meeting_notes.txt into the context, ensuring the answer is based on that specific file even if other files might seem more relevant to the word “timeline.”

Small file manual uploads

  • You upload: Three small PDFs (totaling 50KB).
  • What happens: Since the total size is insignificant, Lumo loads all three files into the context for every subsequent question in that session, rather than searching for relevance.

Missing expected file

If Lumo does not use a file you expected, or you did not use an @mention, the file may not have been ranked as relevant to your question. This does not mean the file is missing or broken.

To improve results, make your question more specific or use @file_name to force a file to be included.

Tips on giving instructions for Projects

Clear, focused instructions help Lumo better understand your workflow and respond in a way that’s consistent with your goals. Here are some tips for getting the best results with Projects:

Be specific: Project instructions should clearly explain what you’re trying to achieve and how you want Lumo to help. Include details such as the type of output you want, your preferred style, or key focus areas. You can also get Lumo to adopt a particular personality to shape how it responds, such as that of a personal fitness assistant or a brainstorm partner.

Define the tone: From formal to friendly, Lumo can adapt its tone of voice to match your Project’s needs. You can specify the intended audience or the general feel you want in responses. For example, “This Project is for social media posts for a new fintech brand, so they should sound knowledgeable but approachable.”

Provide as much context as possible: Help Lumo see the bigger picture by adding your goals, deadlines, and any relevant background, including files and other attachments.

Update as you go: As your work evolves and new ideas and references come in, consistently revisit your Project’s instructions and files to refine or expand your guidance. This enables Lumo to keep up with the latest directions.

Sample InstructionsAct as my editor for university papers, evaluating them from the perspective of a teacher or lecturer. My major is medicine with a focus on psychology this semester. My professor usually prefers original analyses.
Adopt a formal academic tone with precise vocabulary, third‑person voice, and no contractions. Follow American English and use APA style for citations.
While editing, help fact-check my references and if they are consistent with published medical journals from 2010 onwards.
I want to learn to speak and write basic Japanese by August this year. I’m starting from scratch and don’t have any formal education with the language, but have watched a lot of Japanese anime and other media.
You’re my tutor and language teacher, but in a friendly and conversational way. Each interaction should start with a warm‑up question, followed by a short conversation. Highlight any grammar mistakes and help suggest 2–3 alternative expressions based on that.
Set benchmarks and create a lesson plan, and provide me with exercises or any simple tips to improve my grasp of the language daily.
Help me stay on top of my physical wellness progress for the year. My BMI is 26.5 with no medical conditions or prior injuries and I would like to get it down to 24 before the end of 2026. I don’t have any home equipment but have access to a gym with basic facilities such as a treadmill and weights.
You’ll act as my personal trainer and help customize workouts, check in and measure my progress, and generally fine-tune other things I can do to meet my fitness goal like adjusting my diet or lifestyle. Help me stay motivated by using encouraging language.
