If you forget your Proton Account password but you’re still signed in to one of our apps, you can transfer your session to another device using QR code sign-in. This lets you safely access your Proton Account.

How to sign in with a QR code

To get started, you’ll need:

  • Your Origin device (the device you’re already signed in to)
  • Your Destination device (the device you want to sign in to)

This guide uses screenshots from the Proton Mail Android app. But the steps are the same (or similar) in all Proton apps and devices.

Step 1: Open the QR code on your destination device

  1. Open any Proton app on the device you want to sign in on.

  1. Open the help menu by tapping Help or Need help?.

In some apps, you may need to enter your email address then select Continue > Forgot password? instead.

  1. Select Sign in with a QR code.

You should see a QR code.

If your origin device doesn’t have a camera, select Enter key manually instead. This brings up a code that you can type in manually.

Step 2: Scan the code with your origin device

    1. Using your origin device, open any Proton app that you’re signed in to.

    2. Open the app settings menu and select Sign in on another device.

In most apps, you can open your settings by selecting your Avatar, or opening the sidebar and selecting Settings.

    3. Select Scan QR code.

    1. Authenticate using your fingerprint, faceprint, or PIN.

You may also be asked to let Proton access your camera.

    5. Scan the QR code.

If your origin device doesn’t have a camera, tap Enter code manually and enter the code.

That’s it. You’re now signed in to Proton on your destination device. You’ll also see a confirmation on your origin device.
