Proton Drive gives you control over your files, free from surveillance, trackers, and data exploitation. Whether you’re storing cherished photos, important work documents, or sensitive files with personal information, your privacy remains protected and never compromised.
Over the winter, we redesigned our desktop app for macOS and improved performance for up to twice faster file uploads and downloads. Plus, you can now share Proton Drive folders and collaborate on Proton Docs with public sharing links to work together securely with anyone, even those without a Proton account.
Our previous roadmap covered winter and spring, so the following article is a reminder of the new features we’ll be adding to Proton Drive in the next three months. These features were chosen according to Proton community requests and will give you more control over your files, how you organize your photos, and how you share access with others.
What’s coming this spring
Exciting improvements are on the way for Proton Drive and Proton Docs:
Albums: A better way to organize and share photos
Photo albums are coming to the Proton Drive web and mobile apps! Whether it’s photos from a family trip, a birthday party, or your work portfolio, Albums will let you group them into private, shareable collections that are end-to-end encrypted.
You’ll be able to easily invite friends or family to view your albums or contribute their own photos — with control over who has access.
Making the macOS app and Docs even better
This spring, we’re also expanding on the features introduced over the winter, bringing more functionality and polish to macOS and Docs:
Smarter backups on macOS
Following the recent launch of Proton Drive 2.0 for macOS, the next big step is bringing sync folders for Desktop and Documents on Mac, allowing you to automatically back up the files that matter most.
Improved productivity in Docs
Proton Docs continues to evolve into a full-featured, privacy-first collaboration tool. Upcoming improvements include:
- A new home screen will make it faster to find what you’re working on.
- Comment-only access will let you share documents for feedback without handing over editing rights. Collaborators will be able to leave comments and suggestions, but your content will be protected from unapproved changes.
- A find & replace function will enable faster navigation and easier document updates.
- New formatting options, including new line spacing and default font settings, will give you more control over how your documents look and feel.
Sneak peek at our plans beyond spring
One of our most popular requests is to add more tools and features in Drive that make it easier to collaborate and increase your productivity. We’ve got big plans when it comes to how we want to fulfill these requests, but it’s a little too early to go into more detail. Still, you’ll want to keep your eye on this space.
More concretely, we’ll be open-sourcing the software development kit (SDK) that Proton Drive 2.0 for macOS is based on. It will also likely serve as the foundation for a future Linux Drive app.
We’re also building support for photo syncing on Windows. This upcoming feature will let you automatically back up and sync photos from your computer (such as those from the camera folder) to Proton Drive. Once synced, your photos will show up in the Photos tab on the web and mobile apps, so they will be easy to access on your devices.
Built together with the Proton community
Proton is open source and community powered — every feature on this roadmap started with you. Your feedback helps us prioritize what features to add next, so share your feedback on Reddit(new window), UserVoice(new window), or X.(new window)
Proton is built on the idea that you should not need to sacrifice your privacy to be productive. With your help, we’re building a powerful, end-to-end encrypted ecosystem — one that puts people, not profit, at its center.
Let us know what you think of these new improvements — and thank you for building a better internet with us.
