Guidance for your Proton Account password

Proton Account

If you’re using Proton Pass to store your password, the only password you should not save in Proton Pass is your Proton Account password.

We don’t recommend doing this because the password for your Proton Account is the one password that you should memorize. It’s the key to all of your secure data, and as such, it’s important that you and only you know it. We would recommend creating your own strong password that you’re able to remember, not one generated within Proton Pass.

If you don’t memorize this password, you’ll lose access to your Proton Account, and we won’t be able to reset your password. It’s the same as a master password for any other password manager: It’s the one password you need to be able to memorize.

To prepare for the event that you forget your Proton Account password and need to regain access to your account, you should set account recovery methods. If you don’t set any way to recover your Proton Account and then forget your password, you’ll lose access to your account and all your existing emails, contacts, and other encrypted files.
