Proton Mail, a leader in email security and privacy, is announcing today that it has secured $2M USD in a financing round led by Charles River Ventures(new window) (CRV) and the Fondation Genevoise pour l’Innovation Technologique(new window) (FONGIT). The company will use these funds to further invest in the development of new features and to scale infrastructure to meet the growing demand for the service.
Proton Mail launched its beta service in May 2014. Explosive demand overloaded its servers within 48 hours, forcing the company to seek funding to support the rush of new users. This latest round of funding comes on the heels of the more than $550,000 raised by the Swiss start-up in July 2014 from over 10,000 crowdfunding supporters, which set a record for a software technology project.
Proton Mail is now used worldwide by business professionals, journalists, activists, and individuals who value privacy in their communications. While Proton Mail is still in beta, more than 350,000 users have already signed up for the service. The company’s innovative email service distinguishes itself with its ease of use that allows anyone, regardless of tech skill, to benefit from end-to-end email encryption.
“This funding will allow us to finally bring Proton Mail’s automatic end-to-end email encryption to the mainstream,” says Proton Mail Co-Founder Andy Yen. “We are happy to have found partners who understand our long term vision of online privacy and can help us succeed.”
With support from FONGIT, Proton Mail will be moving into new offices in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva and expanding its datacenters in Switzerland, where the service is hosted under the protection of strict Swiss privacy laws.

Proton Mail lève CHF 2M pour porter la communication cryptée vers le grand public.
Le service de haute sécurité des e-mails accèlère considérablement son développement pour répondre à une forte demande.

ProtonMail, un leader en e-mails sécurisés et privés, a annoncé aujourd’hui avoir obtenu CHF 2 millions dans une récolte de fond menée par Charles River Ventures (CRV) et la Fondation Genevoise pour l’Innovation Technologique (FONGIT). La société utilisera ces fonds pour investir davantage dans le développement de nouvelles fonctionnalités et adapter les infrastructures pour répondre à la demande croissante de ce service.
Proton Mail a lancé son service bêta en mai 2014. La forte demande a surchargé ses serveurs en 48 heures, obligeant la société à rechercher des financements pour soutenir l’afflux de nouveaux utilisateurs. Ce dernier financement arrive juste après les $550’000 collectés par les start-up suisses en juillet 2014 avec plus de 10 000 investisseurs par crowdfunding, un record pour un projet de technologie logiciel.
Proton Mail est maintenant utilisé dans le monde entier par des professionnels, des journalistes, des militants et des personnes qui valorisent leur confidentialité dans leurs communications. Bien que Proton Mail soit encore en version bêta, plus de 350’000 utilisateurs se sont déjà inscrits à ce service. Le service de messagerie innovant de l’entreprise se distingue par sa facilité d’utilisation qui permet à tous, indépendamment de leurs compétences techniques, de bénéficier dans sa totalité des e-mails cryptés.

Avec le soutien de FONGIT, Proton Mail emménagera dans des nouveaux bureaux à Plan-les-Ouates, Genève et étendra ses centres de données en Suisse où le service est hébergé sous la protection des lois strictes de confidentialité suisse.
