Not receiving Proton Mail notifications on mobile?

If you’re not getting mobile push notifications for incoming messages, try these troubleshooting tips.

Note: We don’t send push notifications for emails marked as spam.

Android

Check your notification permissions

  1. Open your device Settings. Search for Proton Mail or go to Apps > Proton Mail.

2. Tap Notifications and check that it’s set to Allowed.

Check Google Play Services are enabled

We currently use Google Play Services(fereastră nouă) to implement push notifications.

Restart the app

  • Force close and reopen the app.
  • Once reopened, sign out of your account then sign in again.

Exclude Proton Mail from battery optimization and power saving modes

It’s increasingly common for Android device manufacturers to improve battery life by closing apps. If this happens to Proton Mail, you may not receive push notifications for new messages.

To stop this, you can exclude the Proton Mail app from battery optimization and power saving modes. How to do this depends on your device:

Samsung OneUI

  1. Open your device Settings. Search for Proton Mail or go to Apps > Proton Mail.

2. Scroll to Usage and select Battery.

3. Select Unrestricted from the menu. This will stop Proton Mail from being put to sleep.

Huawei

  1. Open the device’s Settings and go to Advanced settingsBattery managerProtected apps.
  2. Find Proton Mail and protect it.

This adds Proton Mail to your device’s allowlist, preventing it from being closed or put to sleep.

    Reinstall Proton Mail

    If none of the above works, try deleting and reinstalling the Proton Mail app.

    iOS

    Check your notification permissions

    1. Open your device Settings. Search “Proton Mail” or go to Apps > Proton Mail.

    2. Select Notifications from the menu.

      3. Make sure Allow Notifications is enabled.

      4. Force close and reopen the app.

      5. Once the app is reopened, sign out of your account and then sign in again.

      Check notification settings for custom folders

      If you’re not receiving message notifications for certain folders only, notifications may be disabled for those folders. To check this:

      1. Go to your Proton Mail inbox and open the sidebar (Tap ).

      2. Select Settings.

      3. Scroll to Preferences and select Folders and labels.

      4. Find the folder you want to check and tap Edit.

      5. Check that Notification is enabled, then tap Save.

      Reinstall Proton Mail

      If none of the above works, try deleting and reinstalling the Proton Mail app.
