How to enable photo backup

Proton Drive lets you automatically back up the photos on your mobile device in their original quality and with end-to-end encryption using our photo backup feature. This article explains how to enable photo backup for your Android and iOS device.
Before you start, we recommend that you make sure you have enough battery power as the backup process can take some time, especially for larger libraries.
Please note that the backup process will run either until it is complete or you hit your Proton Drive storage limit.
How to enable photo backup for Android
Android
- Open Proton Drive and select the Photos tab.

- Tap Turn on backup.

- You can optionally enable notifications to get updates on your backup.

- Proton Drive will start backing up and encrypting all the photos in your library. You’ll see a progress bar telling you how many more items are left to back up. Once complete, a message will appear saying Backup complete.

- Backup can take quite a while, especially for larger photo collections.
- Due to Android system specifics, backups run faster during the daytime than at night.
- To avoid interruptions to your backup, stay connected to WiFi.
By default, only photos from your Camera folder are backed up. Here’s how to add more folders to your backup in your app settings:
- Open Proton Drive and open the sidebar (tap ☰).

- Select Settings from the menu.

- Tap Photo backup.

- Under Upload from, enable the toggle for each folder you want to back up.

How to enable photo backup for iPhone
- Open Proton Drive and select the Photos tab.

- A Backup is disabled notification will appear. Tap Turn on to enable photo backup.

- You’ll be asked to give Proton Drive access to your photos. Tap Allow full access to continue.

- Proton Drive will start backing up and encrypting your photos. You’ll see a progress bar telling you how many more items are left to back up.

- Backups can take quite a while. For larger photo collections, it could take several days.
- Keep the app open for faster backups. If you have to close the app, keep it running in the background — force closing the app will stop your backup.
