Password check-in

Occasionally, you might get a notification asking you to confirm (verify) your Proton password, even if you’re already signed in.

This is a password check-in. Check-ins help prevent account and data loss by keeping your password fresh in your memory.

We will only ever ask you to confirm your password in-app. Never give your password or account details by email, phone, or any other communication channel — even if the person claims to be from Proton. Learn more

How it works

A password check-in notification is a prompt that asks you to confirm your Proton Account password. Simply enter your password to confirm that you still have access to it and aren’t at risk of being locked out of your account.

A check-in is not a request to change your password. You just need to enter your current password.

By default, we ask you to confirm your password every 30 days. If you consistently enter your password correctly, we’ll ask you less often.

Why we do password check-ins

Because of the nature of Proton’s encryption, it’s important for account holders to know their password (or be able to access it in their password manager).

Your password is used to derive the encryption keys that protect your emails, files, contacts, calendar events, and other data — and we don’t store user passwords on file for security reasons.

So forgetting your password could lead to permanently losing your account and data (unless you have sufficient recovery options enabled).

To help prevent this, we periodically ask you to confirm that you still know your password.

Can I disable password check-ins?

Yes — but we strongly recommend keeping this feature enabled. Confirming your password regularly is the best way to ensure you don’t lose access to your data.

How to disable password check-ins:

  1. Sign in to account.proton.me and open your account settings.
  2. Select Account and password from the sidebar, then select Password check-ins.
  3. Enter your password to confirm.
  4. Toggle Password check-ins off.

Troubleshooting

I don’t know my password

Try using signed-in reset to change your password. Resetting your password this way means you won’t have to restore your encrypted data afterward.

If you’ve set up emergency contacts, you can also ask them to reset your password for you.

I know my password. Why has my check-in failed?

Check the following:

  • Recent password change: If you recently changed your password, make sure you’re entering the new one.
  • Caps Lock and keyboard layout: Make sure Caps Lock is off and you’re using the correct keyboard layout for your password.
  • Autofill issues: Your browser (or password manager) might be autofilling an outdated or incorrect password. Try typing your password manually.
