Common signup problems and solutions
You can create a free or paid Proton Account at proton.me/signup. If you’re having trouble signing up, try these fixes.

Quick fixes
These easy solutions should solve most signup issues:
Check your internet connection
If you don’t have a stable connection, try switching WiFi networks, or switching between WiFi and mobile data.
Disable your VPN or proxy
We don’t block VPN IP addresses(ventana nueva). But VPNs and proxies can interfere with your connection, or cause browser or device issues that stop you from connecting to our website.
Alternatively, try switching to a different VPN server(ventana nueva).
Change your browser or device
- Try signing up with a different browser. Which browsers does Proton recommend?
- Alternatively, try creating your account in one of our apps. A free Proton account gives you access to all Proton services, so it doesn’t matter which app you use.
Signup page doesn’t load properly
If you can access account.proton.me/signup but some page elements aren’t loading or working properly, try these solutions:
Make sure JavaScript, session storage, and cookies are enabled
If you’re trying to create your account on the web, you’ll need these settings enabled. Learn more(ventana nueva) about JavaScript and cookies(ventana nueva).
Check your browser extensions
Here’s how to check if one of your browser extensions is stopping you from signing up to Proton:
- Try creating your Proton account in private browsing or incognito mode (most extensions are disabled in private browsing).
- If that doesn’t work, go back to normal browsing and disable your extensions one at a time. Try creating your account after each one to identify which extension is causing the issue.
Known issues with browser extensions:
- Random Agent Spoofer: “Disable authorization headers” must be unchecked to use Proton Mail.
Can’t access the signup page
If you can use other websites normally but you’re getting a connection error when you try to connect to Proton, our website may have been blocked by your Internet Service Provider (ISP)(ventana nueva) or your network firewall(ventana nueva).
If you’re using a VPN
- Connect to a different server, or try disconnecting temporarily.
- If you have access to Proton VPN, try connecting with Stealth protocol(ventana nueva) and alternative routing enabled. You can connect to Proton VPN without a Proton Account on Android devices.
Run a traceroute
Open your device terminal and run a traceroute(ventana nueva) to proton.me, then report the results to our support team.
Human verification issues
- If you can’t get past CAPTCHA verification, try using email or SMS verification instead.
- If that doesn’t work, or if no human verification methods are shown at all, contact our support team.
