How a global streaming company tests across markets with Proton VPN

At a glance:

Company Profile: Accedo

Industry: Software development | Video streaming

Company size: 450 employees

Problem: Accedo needed a business VPN with broad global server coverage for multi-market geo-testing — and could scale to their organization without additional IT overhead.

Achievement: Accedo deployed Proton VPN for Business, integrated it with Okta via SCIM for automated user provisioning and offboarding, and set up a dedicated IP in the US for client-specific traffic whitelisting

Why Proton Pass was the right fit:

  • Server coverage in 140+ countries, so every market can be tested reliably

  • SCIM integration with Okta, so user access is granted and revoked automatically

  • Dedicated IPs for whitelisting testing traffic with enterprise clients

  • A product that keeps improving

An overview of Accedo

Accedo is a global provider of award-winning software and services spanning the entire video streaming lifecycle including strategy, UX design and engineering, to quality assurance, delivery and ongoing video service optimization.

Over the past 20 years, the company has partnered with many of the world’s leading media companies and content providers — including Paramount, Deutsche Telekom, ITV, Hallmark, BBC, Cogeco, and Tata Play — to help them launch, optimize and grow competitive video streaming businesses.

The challenge

Before a client's service goes live in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, or Colombia, Accedo's engineers make sure that content isn't blocked, that regional restrictions are applied correctly, and that the viewing experience adapts to wherever the viewer is.

Software-led companies like Accedo use VPNs to see exactly what a viewer in every market sees without ever having to get on a plane. To carry out those tests, Accedo's global IT manager Alberto Yufra looked for a VPN with broad, reliable global server coverage.

The business tried two other VPN vendors before landing on Proton.

The first one was reliable enough, but came with the costly overhead of administering and managing users. So every time Yufra wanted to reassign a license, he had to contact support and wait days for the license to be manually released. They moved on.

The next vendor looked promising on paper. It offered business-oriented dashboards, admin controls, and user logs, but lacked the critical global server coverage that was required for an organization like Accedo. "After having played with most of their main competitors, I would totally recommend Proton VPN. It's really at the top of the market," Yufra said.

Why Accedo chose Proton

The server coverage that geo-testing demands

Proton VPN's network spans 20,000+ servers across 140+ countries. For Accedo's engineering teams, that meant they could finally test across every market a client needed without running into any coverage gaps.

Shared servers handle the day-to-day testing, verifying that an application works correctly in Brazil, that content isn't incorrectly blocked in Colombia, that the experience holds up in Chile.

For their clients requiring additional security, Accedo has set up gateways with dedicated IPs so that traffic is always recognized and never blocked by the client's own security systems.

Admin tooling that keeps up with a 450-person org

With 75% of Accedo's team being engineers, user lifecycle management could easily become a full-time job. Proton's SCIM integration with Okta changed that.

When someone joins, access is provisioned automatically. When someone leaves, Okta flags the account and Yufra fixes it in a single click. "Proton makes it very easy," he said. "I click delete and they're gone."

What used to require a support ticket with Accedo's previous vendors, takes seconds.

A product that keeps improving

For a security professional running a remote-first team across multiple jurisdictions, where a provider is headquartered is a structural consideration, not a preference. Proton's Swiss headquarters, operating under the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection. "The peace of mind that comes from being hosted in a secure location right now is real, and people are asking for it," English said.

A customer support team that's engaged

Where other vendors often stopped being responsive post procurement, Proton was there every step of the way from helping him onboard and getting the most of the platform, to prompt resolutions to any issues he's faced.

That's especially important to Yufra who is responsible for the internal IT tickets. "In the entirety of my relationship with Proton, I've had as little as two tickets to manage," he said. With other vendors, he'd be dealing with tickets every week.

The outcome

With Proton, Accedo has reliably reached customers in new markets, without worrying about coverage gaps, license overhead, or administrative overhead. Yufra's team can now focus on shipping the programs that entertain millions.
